  • The pain relieving properties of MSM are well known. MSM most likely inhibits inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes, hormone-like substances that create inflammatory cascades in the body  associated with pain production.

  • Clinical studies have demonstrated that MSM has potent anti-inflammatory properties and can help to halt the further destruction of joint cartilage in osteoarthritis. These studies also revealed improvement in joint mobility.

  • Lawrence8 compared MSM to a placebo in a  doubleblind study. Results demonstrated that pain relief was significantly greater in patients given 2250 mg of MSM for 6 weeks. Eighty-two percent of patients given the MSM reported significant pain reduction versus 18% in the placebo group.

  • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted to find the efficacy of MSM in osteoarthritis pain of the knee. Fifty men and women, 40-76 years of age with knee OA pain were enrolled  in an outpatient medical center. The trial results showed that compared to placebo, MSM produced  significant decreases in WOMAC pain and physical function impairment (P<0.05). MSM also produced improvement in performing activities of daily living when compared to placebo on the SF-36 evaluation (P<0.05) without any major adverse effects9 .

  • Davit et al.10, conducted an animal study for the assessment of MSM on the development of osteoarthritis (OA). The trial shows that MSM  preserved the articular cartilage surface during OA development and reduced inflammation (i.e. TNF-a) in both cartilage and synovium.

  • In one more study6, Jacob and Lawrence also used MSM supplementation in the treatment of back pain, which included a broad spectrum of pain and inflammatory conditions (non-migraine headache, fibromyalgia, tendinitis, carpal-tunnel syndrome). They found that up to 70% of patients reported marked relief in symptoms when MSM was added to the treatment regime. Other conditions that may benefit from MSM supplementation include rheumatoid  arthritis, lupus, scleroderma and interstitial cystitis6.
