Role In Rheumatoid Arthritis & Immuno-Modulatory Diseases

  • MSM was found to act as an immunomodulator, preventing the immune system from mounting dangerous autoimmune responses to noxious  stimuli. It also prevents local inflammation to a significant degree as to halt an autoimmune reaction at the genetic stage of induction11. MSM has been shown to inhibit the development of abnormal antibodies to collagen and to prevent production of rheumatoid factor and antinuclear antibodies (ANA).
MSM may play an important role in immune responses and in rheumatoid arthritis. This has been proven in a clinical trial conducted on Type-II collagen-induced arthritis in SBA/1J mice12. Oral administration of MSM modified immune responses in DBA/1J mice. Arthritic deformation and swelling induced by type II collagen injections (an animal model of rheumatoid arthritis) were significantly diminished in mice drinking MSM compared to controls. Abnormal white blood cell proliferation in lymph nodes was also reduced in mice drinking MSM12.

  • The anti-inflammatory and anti proliferative effect of MSM was demonstrated in a clinical trial conducted by Moore RD et al., in MRL/1pr. The MRL/1pr strain of mice had been identified as a model for the spontaneous development of rheumatoid arthritis-like joint lesions13.

  • The trial revealed that the % of mice experiencing synovial proliferation, synovial inflammation and Pannus formation was less in MSM treated mice compared to control. Moreover the severity of these symptoms was much lesser in experimental group  compared to control group13.

  • The decreases in inflammatory joint disease observed with MSM treatment in this study are consistent with previously reported decreases in autoantibody titers and abnormal T cell proliferation in similar animals; moreover, they are consistent with the clinical effect of MSM seen in RA patients at Dr. Jacob's clinic at  Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU)13.
